Top Ten Tricks for Taking Green Pastures Cod Liver Oil

  1. Find Your Preferred Temperature:  Green Pasture Cod Liver Oil is shelf-stable, and can be stored in the refrigerator or on the shelf.  It is a matter of preference.  Many people find the liquid cod liver oil more palatable if it is refrigerated.  Please note that refrigeration sometimes results in the liquid becoming cloudy or crystallized, which is normal and NOT an indication that it has gone bad/rancid..

  2. Find Your Preferred Consistency:  Depending on its temperature, Green Pasture products will have a consistency that varies from bottle to bottle.  If it is warm, it will be thinner.  If it is cold, it will be a bit thicker.  To thin it out, place the jar in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes.

  3. David Wetzel, Owner of Green Pasture’s Preferred Method:  Add Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Skate Liver Oil, and Butter Oil  to 2 ounces of warm water or tea…and Bottoms up!

  4. Try a flavored gel:  While Green Pasture has made their fermented cod liver oil available in a variety of flavored gels, it is important to note that flavoring is added to the product’s taste–not substituted for it.  Chocolate cream-flavored Fermented Cod Liver Oil, after all, is still cod liver oil, so don’t expect hot fudge.  BUT a lot of people do enjoy the flavored gels and swear by them.  Nourishing World now carries the fermented cod liver oil/butter oil blend gels in unflavored, cinnamon tingle, or chocolate cream.

  5. Hold Your Nose!  Put your cod liver oil on a spoon, plug your nose, gulp it down, and swallow before taking a breath.  Chase with water.  This eliminates the communication point between your olfactory sense and your taste buds and is less stimulating.

  6. To get a child to take fermented cod liver oil, Green Pasture recommends blending 1 cup of yogurt, 1 teaspoon of fermented cod liver oil, and frozen berries, pouring into popsicle molds, and freezing.

  7. Apply to the skin:  While the science behind the actual amount of fermented cod liver oil that is absorbed through the skin has not been thoroughly reported, rubbing cod liver oil directly on the skin is an acceptable method for those who are unable to take it orally.  Green Pasture recommends applying ¼ to ½ teaspoon of fermented cod liver oil to a baby’s bottom during a diaper change.

  8. Dr. Oz 2 Week Rapid Weight Loss Diet Sample Meal Plan

Since the day we posted the blog about the Dr. Oz Two Week Diet, we have been excitedly reading everyone’s stories of health boosting and weight loss success, and listening to you rally around each other in support.  The Nourishing World community becomes a more welcome sanctuary with each passing day!  There have been a lot of questions surrounding what to eat and the specifics of the day-to-day diet for the Dr. Oz 2 Week Detox Diet.  If you haven’t already read through the diet overview, allowed foods, and eliminated foods, it can be found here.

If you are considering embarking on 2 weeks of rapid weight loss with this plan, you will see that there are A LOT of vegetables!  It’s helpful to ‘think outside the box’ and make substitutions for your eliminated foods.  It’s also helpful to have a few gadgets in the kitchen!  Consider picking up a mandolin slicer, spiral slicer, or a food processor to mix things up a bit!  We’ve eliminated starches, but there are several low-glycemic-index vegetables on the list that can be twisted into noodles.  (Many apologies to those who have been waiting for the release of this next post.  A deep bow of gratitude to you for your patience. )  So, without further ado, the RECIPES!

Dr. Oz 2 Week Rapid Weight Loss Diet Sample Meal Plan


  • Eliminate:  Caffeine, Wheat, Sweeteners, Carbohydrates/Starches, and Dairy
  • Eat only between 8am and 8pm.
  • Between meals, drink Detox Broth

             Waking Up:

  • Drink a hot cup of water with ½ lemon, squeezed.



  • Vegetable Plate loaded with Broccoli, Celery, Sugar Snap Peas, and  Sliced Peppers
  • ½ cup of Tzatziki for dipping (recipe below)


  • Tossed Salad with Spinach, Tomato, Onion, ½ Avocado, 6 oz Grilled Chicken, and ½ Cup of Tzatziki


  • Hummus and 2 brown rice cakes


  • Zucchini “Noodles” with Kale Pesto and Artichokes (recipe below)


  • Take a Detox Bath with 2 Cups Epsom Salts and 1 Cup Baking Soda


Tzatziki (Cucumber Yogurt Dip/DressingDr.Oz_Tzatziki_Dressing

  • 1 Cucumber grated and pressed
  • 1 C 2% Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 1 Clove Garlic, Minced
  • Lemon Juice to taste
  • ½ t Chopped Dill

Mix the yogurt, garlic, and lemon juice.  Stir in the grated, pressed cucumber.  Add chopped dill.

Zucchini “Noodles” with Kale Pesto and Artichokes

  • 2 ZucchiniDr.Oz_zucchini_noodle_recipe
  • 1 ½ C Kale
  • 1 Tomato, Chopped
  • 2 ½  T Olive Oil
  • 1 Clove Garlic
  • Lemon Juice to Taste
  • ¼ C Almonds
  • 1 Artichoke, sliced

Using a spiral slicer, a mandolin, or a knife, slice zucchini into noodle-shaped strips.  Boil water and add zucchini noodles.  Allow to boil for one minute.

To a blender or food processor, add Kale, Tomato, 1 ½ T Olive Oil, Garlic, Lemon Juice, and Almonds.  Blend into a paste.

Saute artichokes in Olive Oil over Medium heat until they begin to soften.  Add Kale Pesto and cook for 3 minutes.  Add zucchini noodles and stir until warm.

January is the most popular month of the year for Cleanses and Detox Diets.  It’s no wonder why:  the beginning of a new year has the wonderful feeling of starting fresh, beginning anew, and making changes for the better.  Doesn’t it feel amazing to just let go?

As with anything that reaches the realm of the popular, though, all this talk about Detox can get pretty confusing.  You may be wondering, what exactly should I be detoxifying?  What do I need to cleanse?  What do I have to gain or to lose?  Since we love a good detox, we thought it was important to remove the veil of mystery from this particular topic, and to share some of our favorite natural tools to detoxify the body and clear the mind.

What Is Detox?

Detoxification is a natural process whereby your organs and immune system process and eliminate toxins from your body.  It is the digestive system eliminating waste, the lymphatic system filtering bacteria from lymph fluid, and the kidneys filtering toxins from the blood.  Detox is a part of every living cell in the body.  So, if it is such a natural process, why do we need to help it along?

 Because our bodies were not designed to live like this.

We work too hard, we eat too much, too little, or just the wrong things.  Our world is polluted, from the air we breathe to the water we drink and the soil we use to grow our crops.  This world is just too toxic for the human body to to detoxify on its own.

Yesterday, we examined the Dr. Oz 2 Week Diet and the recommended supplement list required to complete a rapid weight loss transformation in a matter of only two weeks!  Next, let’s talk food…we heard what was on the list of don’t’s, so you’re probably wondering what you can eat for the next two weeks.  The good news is that you can have a delicious breakfast smoothie every morning, an unlimited amount of low-glycemic foods, and as much Dr. Oz Detox Broth as you can drink.  Pretty easy, right?  We thought so too, until we took a read through the twice-weekly process of cooking homemade vegetable broth and looked for an easy alternative.

What Can I Eat During the Dr. Oz 2 Week Diet?

No:  Caffeine, Wheat, Sweeteners, Carbohydrates/Starches, or Dairy.

Exceptions and Allowed Foods:

  1. Green tea: Preferably organic

  2. Six Ounces of chicken, turkey or fish per day

  3. 1/2 cup of cooked brown rice per day

  4. Good fats such as avocados and olive oil are ok in moderation

  5.  1 cup of 2% plain Greek yogurt per day

  6. UNLIMITED Low-Glycemic Vegetables from the list below

  7. UNLIMITED Vegetable List:


    Artichoke hearts


    Bamboo shoots

    Bean sprouts


    Brussels sprouts








    Beans (green, kidney, garbanzo)

    Greens (collard, kale, mustard, turnip)

    Salad greens (chicory, endive, escarole, iceberg lettuce, romaine, spinach, arugula, radicchio, watercress)

    Detox Broth Recipe:

    3 qts water

    1 large onion, chopped

    2 carrots, sliced

    1 cup of winter squash, cut into large cubes

    1 cup of root vegetables: any of the following: turnips, parsnips, and rutabagas for sweetness

    2 cups of chopped greens: any of the following: kale, parsley, beet greens, collard greens, chard, dandelion,

    2 celery stalks

    1/2 cup cabbage

    4 (1/2-inch) slices of fresh ginger

    2 cloves of whole garlic (not chopped or crushed)

    Sea salt (to taste)


    Add all the ingredients at once and place on a low boil for approximately 60 minutes. It may take a little longer. Simply continue to boil to taste.

    Cool, strain (throw out the cooked vegetables), and store in a large, tightly-sealed glass container in the fridge.
