Super Foods for Super Healthy Pets!

by Lynn Gamwell

Our pets are such an integral part of our families. They share their love unconditionally and bring joy and companionship into our lives. Often we feel closer to our pets than to many people. So it would stand to reason that we want to feed our beloved animals the healthiest diets we can. Just as we are concerned with our own nutrition, we need to think carefully about the choices we are making for our pets. They depend on us to feed and care for them as we would any other member of our family.

Pet Supplements

It can be challenging to get all the necessary nutrients a pet needs through diet alone. Especially if one is using commercial pet food that depends heavily on meat from CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations), the food may be low in necessary amino acids, phytonutrients, trace minerals, and fatty acids. In reality, most commercial pet food is not very good for pets. But even if you are serving your animal real meat, it still may be lacking. Supplementation is the critical piece for prevention and treatment of illness. This is because supplements treat the root causes of illness rather than only the symptoms thereby strengthening the body’s overall health. Nourishing World has a comprehensive line of family pet products to naturally boost your pet’s health and give your furry friends the nutrition they deserve.  Our most recent supplement addition is one we think will have tails wagging everywhere!

Green Mush

Nourishing World has recently added Green Mush by Healthforce to our pet product line up.  This organic, non-GMO, vegan combination of superfoods is designed to augment your pet’s diet, but it’s so full of natural goodness you could even eat it yourself!  It was developed by Dr. James Sheridan, a doctor of homeopathic medicine, who is committed to making pure, hard-core, nutritionals with super high standards for source quality and absence of any toxic substances. He developed Green Mush originally for his pet rat, June.   Many versions were tried until he was satisfied that June both loved her mush and was exhibiting increased vitality and health. Although Dr. Sheridan’s work focuses primarily on humans, his compassion for animals inspired him to market June’s superfood powder as Green Mush so that other people’s pets could be in amazing health like June and Dr. Sheridan’s other pets.

Many pets love Green Mush as much as June does. Some animals will be happy to lap it straight up though others will want it mixed in with their food. Some animals take a little while to get used to the new taste, but most eventually look and feel so much better that they develop an eagerness for it. The Green Mush delivers 100% absorbable high concentrations of potent whole food nutrients and probiotics.

To serve Green Mush mix a little of the green powder with liquid such as water, milk, or coconut oil, to create the “mush”. One can also use yogurt or juice if your animal prefers it. (See product serving size suggestions for various types and sizes of animals on the Green Mush product ) This reconstitutes the dried whole foods including spirulina, chlorella, nettles, wheat grass, kelp, carob pod, alfalfa leaf juice, burdock root, dulse leaf, ginger root and abundant Co-enzyme Q10 for energy production and longevity. Probiotics and digestive enzymes from organic whole food sources are added for ultimate digestive and immune health.

Give Green Mush to your pets for:

  • Strong and vibrant energy
  • Improving digestion
  • Maintaining a soft and shiny coat
  • Accelerated healing
  • Greater longevity
  • Decreasing inflammation and arthritis
  • Improvement in hind leg paralysis
  • Freshening breath
  • Alkalizing with powerful green superfoods

Nourishing World recommends all pets get Green Mush in their diet. It provides the optimal nutrition to prevent and ease the symptoms of disease. Dr. Sheridan’s unique standards for integrity and caring for our non-human mammalian family members is unsurpassed in the world of pet supplements. The integrity of his products, and of Green Mush in particular, will have your pet looking and feeling better than you ever knew possible. Give your pet the Green Mush advantage and feel the love!

Solutions for Seasonal Health Hazards

by Lynn Gamwell

Get Set for Spring

The buds are bursting into bloom, and the world is coming back to life as warm weather approaches. Spring and summer are the times we all long for with thoughts of outdoor fun, gatherings with our favorite people, and perhaps even some vacation travel. But just as the warmth brings carefree attitudes, it also brings it’s own safety concerns. Nourishing World has you covered for all your seasonal safety needs so that you can just relax and have fun!

Just the other day I was able to eat my lunch outside for the first time this year!  What a delight to feel the sun on my skin as I watched the robins pecking for worms in the grass and noticed plants poking their winter weary shoots out of the ground. The warm sun was so enticing that I shed a few excess layers of clothing. Perhaps 20 minutes later I was surprised to go indoors and realize that I had fresh tan lines! The sun’s UV rays are already strong despite the early spring oscillation between warm and winter weather. UV rays cause sunburn along with hazards such as skin cancer and premature wrinkles. We often don’t know we are endangering our skin until it’s too late and our skin is damaged!

We are as likely to get sunburned now as we are in August when the warmth reminds us of our need for protection. So don’t be fooled by the cool weather. Now is the time to rev up our sun protection habits for the season. While we can’t reduce the damage of previous sun exposure, we can decrease the likelihood of developing skin cancer by protecting ourselves as time goes forward. Babies and children are especially vulnerable to sunburn and should always be lathered up with sunscreen. Fortunately Nourishing World has all natural, non-toxic, highly effective, mineral barrier sunscreens for your whole family. Be sure to stock up on Thinksport and Thinksport Kids 50 SPF broad spectrum sunscreens that block UVA and UVB rays with non-oily, easily absorbed formulas. They have been consistently top rated by the Environmental Working Group’s guide to the safest sunscreens of the season. All Thinksport products contain the highest allowable sunscreen SPF per the FDA while still being safe and effective. Or choose Dr Mercola’s Broad Spectrum Sunscreen in SPF 30 or 15 for it’s nourishing, moisturizing, lighter protection. It is rated “1” in the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep list for safety and efficacy! We wouldn’t sell you anything we wouldn’t use on our kids and ourselves. We want no artificial fragrances, no nanoparticles, and only non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic ingredients and we know you do too!  Look no further, we’ve done the research for you and these sunscreens are the best!

Bug Spray

Have you ever noticed that as soon as the weather warms up even slightly the bugs come out?  Somehow I forget about those pesky, irritating creatures when I am longing for spring. But they are more than annoying. Mosquitoes carry serious illnesses such as West Nile Virus and ticks can carry Lyme disease. Unfortunately the list of bug born illnesses grows longer by the day. Until recently, highly toxic DEET was the main insect repellent available commercially. Thankfully we now have 100% natural and non-toxic Mercola Bug Spray, which is free from the nasty neurotoxins and chemicals of mainstream repellents while having been proven to repel bugs just as effectively as DEET.  The oils of citronella, lemongrass, peppermint, and vanilla give Mercola Bug Spray a light, lemony, pleasing scent. Use Mercola Bug Spray on your whole family. Spray it on your pets too. They would thank you if they could!

Supplement Travel Tips

Warm weather, kids out of school, and I get restless to go somewhere!  Soon we will be packing our bags and heading out of town for some well deserved vacation time.  At home I am conscientious about eating well, getting my daily greens, and taking my supplements.   But vacation demands a more laid back approach allowing our normal structure and routine to be forgotten for a while. But who wants to come home from vacation feeling rotten?  Fortunately there is no need to feel either restricted in our vacation meals or guilty about letting our good habits slide for a little while. All that is needed is a little pre-planning. Do you like your protein shake in the morning?  Count out the number of days you will be gone and take just that number of scoops of your favorite protein powder in a small jar or bag to be mixed with almond or coconut milk, juice, or even just water in a pinch. (Try Perfect Plant Protein Powder for vegetarian protein, Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen for grass fed protein, and Goatein Milk Protein Powder for an easier digested form of dairy. Compare all our protein options at Nourishing World to find the one that is best for you.)  Don’t forget your shaker for easy mixing! Or if you just want to be sure to get your daily dose of veggies, take along the necessary number of scoops of Perfect Aquatic Greens powder or take the capsules instead.  You will know you are not neglecting your health should you choose to indulge a bit on vacation. And let’s face it; what is vacation without a little indulgence?

Get Ready, Get Set, and Go!

Now that I have reminded you of all the hazards of summer, don’t fret.  Just get your sunscreen, bug spray, and supplement supplies stocked.  Soon you’ll be ready to jump into warm weather with all your bases covered!

What’s in Your Bug Spray? Effective Natural Bug Repellent for Kids, Adults, and Pets

Dangers of DEET in Bug Spray

Do you know what you’re spraying on yourself when you head outdoors? DEET is the active ingredient in most bug sprays, and also one of the most worrisome. DEET is a dangerous chemical with the potential to cause serious and permanent central nervous system and neurological damage such as:

  • Disorientation
  • Clumsiness
  • Poor Coordination
  • Learning and Memory Problems
  • Seizures
  • Coma

Even when simply applied to the skin, DEET is absorbed into the bloodstream and the digestive tract, and when used alongside oxybenzone sunscreen, DEET enters the bloodstream even more rapidly. One study found that DEET blocks cholinesterase, an enzyme critical for the nervous system. Chemicals that inhibit cholinesterase can cause mild bothersome symptoms (watery eyes, hypersalivation) at low doses, but higher levels of exposure lead to muscle spasms and death. The risks of DEET are considered so substantial that you are advised to never inhale or ingest it, wash it off as soon as you return indoors, and immediately wash clothing or leave it outdoors.

More Dangerous Chemicals Found in Bug Spray

Other chemicals found in bug sprays include picaridin, metofluthrin, P-mentane-3, 8-diol, and IR3535. These products have been linked to various side effects and health risks. What’s more, chemical bug sprays are designed to kill bugs. Something that causes insects to die may be highly likely to cause adverse effects in humans and pets as well, especially with repeated or cumulative exposures. Rather than use pesticides on your skin, turn instead to natural bug spray products that safely repel the nuisance bugs with natural essential oils instead of killing them. Mosquitos, fleas, and ticks don’t like the smell of the oils in these natural bug sprays, and will stay away… and without the potential harm to your child or pet.

What about pet flea and tick treatments for your pets?

Pet protection against bugs — including pills, collars, and topical treatments from popular, vet-recommended brands such as Frontline or Advantage. — are highly toxic, and unfortunately not necessarily effective. These products are full of chemical organophosphates and carbamates such as Pyriproxyfen, Fipronil, S-methoprene, Imidacloprid, Permethrin, Selamectin, Nitenpyram, Spinosad, Propoxur, and Flumethrin. These are poisons, many of them similar or the same as those used in farming. Pets poisoned by these toxins may:

  • Act lethargic
  • Struggle to walk
  • Appear uncoordinated
  • Drool
  • Whine or yelp in pain
  • Breathe shallowly
  • Lose appetite
  • Become overly excitable
  • Have a fever
  • Develop seizures
  • Die

Are pet bug treatments safe for the rest of your family?

Pets aren’t the only ones at risk from these toxic treatments. Members of the household, too, may exhibit ill effects, particularly young children, as they have undeveloped immune systems and a habit of putting everything in their mouth. Pregnant women and their unborn babies are also especially at risk from organophosphate exposure. The EPA has determined that a child’s organophosphate exposure on the day of a pet’s flea treatment application may exceed safe levels by more than 50,000 percent! Those exposed to these chemicals may exhibit symptoms ranging from acute illness and developmental problems to cancer, Parkinson’s disease, disability, or death.

Is there an effective natural bug spray that’s safe for families and pets?

YES! Don’t just give up bug spray altogether, as contracting mosquito and tick borne illness such as West Nile Virus, encephalitis, and Lyme Disease can have very serious — even deadly — consequences. Mercola Bug Spray is a natural bug spray that’s safe for the whole family to use and can be used on your furry friends, too. This non-toxic bug repellent is DEET-free and completely natural. Made from citronella, lemongrass oil, peppermint oil, and vanillin, Mercola Bug Spray has been found in lab studies to be even more effective than DEET bug sprays. Mercola Bug Spray is also biodegradable and safe for the environment, as it does not pollute rivers and streams.

8 Signs Your Pet Needs Probiotics

Mercola_Pet_ProbioticsBy Ali Wetherbee

Do you give your dog or cat probiotics? Just like in humans, probiotics help your pet’s digestive system run smoothly, strengthen his immune system, and improve his overall health. While all pets can benefit from supplemental probiotics, the signs below are indicators that your cat or dog may be in need of some extra support.

1. Your pet is on medication or recently took antibiotics

Antibiotics destroy all of the bacteria in the digestive system — including the beneficial microflora that help your pet ward off illness and keep the gastrointestinal tract in balance and functioning well. Any time your vet administers a course of antibiotics to your pet, you should follow it with a course of probiotics or increase your pet’s usual probiotic dose to restore the healthy flora in the intestines. The same is true of steroids and many other medications.

2. He’s itching and scratching all day long

Signs of allergies include not only scratching and rashes but also excessive eye tearing, respiratory problems, and poor weight gain. Allergies in pets can be caused by a variety of conditions, including yeast infections (such as candida) and leaky gut syndrome. Many people find their pets experience allergy relief, as well as alleviation of the underlying condition, from supplemental probiotics.

3. She has digestive issues

Digestive disturbances including diarrhea, constipation, excessive or smelly gas, frequent burping, and vomiting indicate food is not being digested properly. Flooding the digestive tract with beneficial bacteria can restore its proper functioning and leave your pet more comfortable and healthier. An excess of bad bacteria in the gut can lead to more serious or chronic health problems.

4. Your dog or cat has bad breath

If your dog has doggy breath or your cat’s mouth stinks, your pet most likely has a bacterial imbalance in the oral cavity or the intestines. Harmful bacteria lead to halitosis, but a daily probiotic will increase the amount of good bacteria, outnumbering the bad, and quickly get his breath smelling better. Make sure to brush your pet’s teeth regularly, too.

5. Fido has frequent infections

Infections in pets include yeast infections, candidiasis, ear infections, and urinary tract infections. You might notice a bloody or yellow discharge, a strange smell, waxy buildup, ear rubbing, a change in urination habits, or red, irritated skin, along with pain, fever, poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting. Probiotics keep the harmful yeasts and bacteria in check, reducing or eliminating the overgrowth that causes these infections.

6. Fluffy seems stressed

Pet stress comes from a variety of sources: traveling, moving, performing, training, staying in a kennel, being cooped up for long periods of time, battling an illness, or meeting a new addition to the family. It may reveal itself as changes in mood or behavior, excessive shedding (i.e. more than twice a year), vomiting, or diarrhea, Stress can deplete the friendly bacteria in the gut, so it is a good idea to administer probiotics before, during, and after any potential stressor.

7. Your pet eats commercial pet food

Low-quality pet foods are full of cheap grains, which are hard for dogs, and especially cats, to digest, often resulting in malabsorption and signs of malnutrition. A probiotic may aid in digestion and help your pet absorb more nutrients. While there is a marketing trend toward labeling pet foods with the word “probiotics,” the labeling is often inaccurate and the food generally contains very little live beneficial bacteria due to the manufacturing process. You are better off supplementing with a quality probiotic formula containing strains specifically selected for pets (rather than humans) and verified to contain the active probiotics listed on the label.

8. He has a chronic illness

Chronic fatigue, inflammation, liver or kidney disease, obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and hyperthyroidism are some, among many, conditions with which pets may benefit from probiotic support. Chronic illness is often linked to the development of cancers; for example, IBD is associated with lymphoma in cats. That is why it’s important to alleviate not only the symptoms of ongoing illness, but the underlying inflammation and the over- or under-active immune responses as well. Probiotics boost the immune system, aid in detoxification, and decrease inflammation.

The Best Pet Probiotic Formula

Mercola Complete Pet Probiotics contain specially chosen bacterial strains ideal for pets, rather than strains used for humans. This formula is also able to withstand your pet’s stomach acid. One serving of Mercola Pet Probiotics contains 58 billion active bacteria and 14 different strains — levels that exceed the recommendation of 20-40 million bacteria per serving and 10 different bacterial strains. This means it is more potent and effective than other brands, which may contain insufficient microorganisms to propagate and thus restore or maintain a healthy balance of flora. Mercola Pet Probiotics are also GMP compliant, a certification that ensures the supplement meets standards of potency, safety, and purity.

Coconut Oil for Pets

Coconut_oil_hookworm_remedy (1)By Ali Wetherbee

Coconut oil is becoming well-known as a superfood with its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. It’s not just useful for humans, though — coconut oil is a perfect addition to your pet’s diet, and can reduce his susceptibility to viruses, infections, and parasites. Full of beneficial medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), lauric acid, and healthy saturates fats, coconut oil offers your pet numerous advantages:

  • Reduces or eliminates parasites such as Giardia
  • Prevents and alleviates yeast infections, including Candida
  • Cuts cancer risk
  • Heals skin problems
  • Keeps coat and skin healthier
  • Improves digestion
  • Enhances nutrient absorption
  • Maintains healthy weight and boosts metabolism
  • Normalizes insulin levels and thyroid function
  • Prevents diabetes
  • Treats skin inflammation, wounds, rashes, and infections
  • Neutralizes pet odors and bad breath
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Eliminates fleas
  • Reduces hairballs
  • Increases energy
  • Improves problems with joints or ligaments, including arthritis

The recommended daily dose is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of pet weight, or 1 tablespoon for every 30 pounds. Start slowly, with as little as 1/4 teaspoon, and gradually work up to the full recommended dose. Some pets will have flu-like symptoms — fatigue, discomfort, or diarrhea — if they consume too much coconut oil too quickly. This is often a detox reaction, since coconut oil destroys all the bacteria, parasites, yeasts, fungi, and other microorganisms in your pet’s system, but increasing the dose slowly should minimize or eliminate this reaction. You can also divide the dose — half with breakfast, the rest with dinner. If your dog or cat seems uncomfortable or has any adverse effects, reduce the dosage to allow his body to get used to the oil, and slowly work back up to the target amount.

How to Give Your Pet Coconut Oil

Coconut oil should be consumed with food. Both cats and dogs will often happily lick up a spoonful of the oil before meals. You can also mix it directly into their food or add it to your recipe if you cook your own pet food. One trick is to put a bit of coconut oil on your cat’s paw artbefore meals; she will lick it off.

Coconut oil can also be used externally for wounds, rashes, infections, dry skin or coat, and flea prevention. Rub a generous amount into your pet’s skin and coat. Wrap the affected area with a towel for a few minutes to allow it to absorb into the skin before being licked off.

Organic Coconut Oil from Nourishing World

Nourishing World offers two great organic coconut oils: Perfect Coconut Oil and Green Pasture Blue Breeze Coconut Oil.

Your pet can also get multiple healthy oils in one simple supplement. Green Pasture Blue Ice Infused Coconut Oil includes not only coconut oil, but also Fermented Cod Liver Oil, High Vitamin Butter Oil, and Skate Liver Oil.

Fermented Cod Liver Oil: The Number One Supplement for Your Pet

By Ali Wetherbee

My strongest advice is if you supplement with nothing else, you always supplement with fresh cod liver oil.
-Dr. Ian Billinghurst, holistic vet and author of The BARF Diet

Most pets today do not get enough omega-3s. Commercial pet foods are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which causes an imbalance in the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. A high quality omega-3 supplement can correct this imbalance and the symptoms caused by it. Even if your pet is eating an all-meat or raw diet, supermarket meat — most of which comes from CAFOs — is much lower in omega-3s than meat from free-range, pastured animals. Excess omega-6 can lead to inflammation and many other health problems. While pet food companies are starting to recognize this and add omega-3s to their formulas, they generally use plant-sourced omega-3s, which lack the EPA and DHA essential to your pet’s health.

Nourishing World recommends supplementing your pet’s diet with Green Pasture Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil, which is an excellent source of EPA and DHA, as well as vitamins A and D. Fermented cod liver oil is important because the fermentation process retains the nutrients that are otherwise easily destroyed by exposure to heat or air.

Benefits of Fermented Cod Liver Oil for Pets

Adding Green Pasture’s Fermented Cod Liver Oil to your pet’s diet has numerous benefits, many of which are similar to the benefits of FCLO in humans:

  • Keeps the brain developing and functioning well; slows age-related cognitive decline
  • Supports cardiovascular health; lowers blood pressure and triglycerides
  • Improves the immune response and reduces inflammation
  • Improves inflammatory conditions such as allergies, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Aids in healthy weight maintenance
  • Leaves skin and coat healthier
  • Restores joint, bone, and muscle health
  • Strengthens the immune system and supports pets with cancer, kidney disease, or heart disease
  • Enhances vision
  • Reduces itching
  • Improves energy
  • Supports overall health, growth, and development

To avoid vitamin A toxicity, Dr. Billinghurst recommends giving a quantity of cod liver oil containing 20-40IU of vitamin A per pound of pet weight a day. Smaller pets may require weekly dosing. One teaspoon of Green Pasture Fermented Cod Liver Oil contains about 10,000IU of vitamin A. So a small cat could get about 1ml a week, while a large dog can safely take about 1/2tsp per day.

Approximate Dose Formula:

Your pet’s weight in pounds x 0.019 = ___ ml per day

If the result is too small to measure, multiply by 7 for weekly dosage. Five milliliters equals about one teaspoon.

This is just a guideline, and it is generally recommended to start small and increase the dose as necessary. Although it is unlikely that your pet will experience any negative effects, you can also decrease the dosage if needed to avoid any unwanted side effects. Many pets will happily take their FCLO right from the spoon, but you can also mix it into their food. Make sure to choose the unflavored variety, as some of the natural oils used in the flavored options are not safe for pets.

Green Pasture Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil

Green Pasture Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil is one of the highest quality cod liver oil supplements available. The fermentation process preserves nutrients and since no heat is used, the micronutrients and enzymes are retained as well. No chemical solvents or fillers are used. Every lot of Green Pasture’s FCLO is tested for metals, PCBs, and pathogens, ensuring a pure, non-toxic product.
