Summer Supplement #1: Adaptogens

As temperatures rise, our energy levels tend to fall, and we’re left slogging through the hottest days. We often experience this as the “summer blahs,” or perhaps an energy crash around 2 or 3pm. While caffeine might offer a bit of a pick-me-up, it’s usually short-lived, and may be accompanied by jitters, nervousness, and other adverse effects. To help the body naturally adapt to the physical stress of high temperatures, adaptogenic supplements such as Perfect Rhodiola and Perfect Cordyceps are great options that combat fatigue without leaving you overstimulated. These adaptogens normalize bodily imbalances, adrenal function, cortisol and other hormone levels, metabolic processes, and oxygen utilization — all physical effects of stress on the body. The result of this proper regulation caused by taking adaptogens like rhodiola rosea or cordyceps is that you feel less fatigued, calmer, more energized, and even generally healthier and happier.

Summer Supplement #2: Fermented Cod Liver Oil

Fermented cod liver oil is great for boosting energy, supporting bone health, and protecting against sun sensitivity. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A and D.

Vitamin A reduces signs of aging and may protect against skin cancer. One study found that those who took a vitamin A supplement daily were 60% less likely to develop melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Vitamin A also works to repair skin damaged due to sun exposure and aging.

In addition to supporting the immune system and keeping up energy, adequate vitamin D helps prevent abnormal cell growth, reducing your risk of developing certain types of cancer. Although the sun is the best source of vitamin D, most of us are at the office during the sunniest part of the day. Even if you are able to spend time outdoors, chances are you tend to stay in the shade or covered in sunblock on those bright sunny days. Unless you get a decent amount of sunshine each day (the exact time needed varies depending on geographical location, weather, skin type, etc.) you should continue taking a vitamin D supplement all summer long. Those with seasonal allergies or inflammatory conditions may benefit from taking a vitamin D supplement even if you get plenty of sun exposure, as vitamin D is highly anti-inflammatory. Fermented cod liver oil is an excellent food source of naturally-occurring vitamin D, and appears to work synergistically with the vitamin A in cod liver oil.

Summer Supplement #3: Astaxanthin

What could be better as we head into summer than edible sunscreen?! Astaxanthin acts as an internal sunscreen that scavenges free radicals and prevents ultraviolet damage, skin cancer, and other cancers as well. A powerful antioxidant-rich carotenoid, astaxanthin is an anti-inflammatory pain reliever and protects the eyes, heart, brain, and even the mitochondria. Astaxanthin also maintains skin’s moisture, smoothness, and elasticity, reducing wrinkles, sagging, and signs of aging or sun damage such as freckles, age spots, and sun spots. While you should still probably smear on some natural sunscreen for external protection against sunburn while astaxanthin levels begin to build up to therapeutic levels, many have found this supplement can reduce or eliminate their need for sunblock as well as allow them to stay out in the heat longer without feeling sick. Read more about astaxanthin here.

Summer Supplement #4: Vitamins C & E

Vitamin C and Vitamin E together protect against ultraviolet radiation and may reduce your likelihood of getting sunburned. What’s more, a 2005 study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that combining vitamins C and E reduced DNA damage due to sun exposure.

Vitamin C supports your body with the stress of summer heat, lowering body temperature and preventing heat-related problems such as heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. This vitamin keeps the sweat glands functioning optimally on hot days so that they do not tire out too quickly. Since vitamin C is an anti-inflammatory antioxidant, it prevents and repairs sun damage by encouraging collagen production and tissue growth. Vitamins C and E both also act as a natural antihistamines, relieving symptoms of summer allergies, nasal symptoms, and asthma.

Summer Supplement #5: Weight Loss Supplements

Summer means shorts and bikinis, so now is the time to get into shape! If you’re looking for a little boost to your diet and exercise efforts, these four supplements can help you shed pounds more quickly yet naturally, without the dangers of traditional diet pills and stimulants.

Dr. Oz dubbed raspberry ketones “The Number One Miracle In A Bottle.” While no weight loss aid can totally overcome the effects of a poor diet and inactivity (sorry, you still have to eat healthy and exercise!),  Research suggests that raspberry ketones may increase levels of adiponectin, a protein found at higher levels in thinner people and known to play a key role in lipid and glucose metabolism.

Lite’N-Up is a great meal replacement, snack, or post-workout protein drink. Made with natural fat burners like CLA, green tea, and garcinia cambogia, Lite’N-Up is packed with protein, fiber, and nutrients. This weight loss supplement contains no sweeteners (although it does have a pleasant, naturally sweet vanilla taste!) and less lactose than whey concentrates. A Lite’N-Up shake stabilizes your blood sugar and satisfies your appetite, so you’re less likely to overeat. Studies have shown that adding whey protein to your diet can reduce body fat while retaining muscle mass, which translates to greater weight loss compared to those who used other types of protein powders or no protein supplement at all.

Dr. Oz has also recommended two other supplements, CLA and green coffee bean. Mercola CLA appears to shrink fat cells and increase metabolic rate. CLA occurs at highest levels in grass-fed dairy and meat, which may explain why modern diets are lacking in CLA and tend to lead to obesity. Perfect Green Coffee is 50% chlorogenic acid and is extracted from unroasted coffee beans. Green coffee lowers high blood pressure and blood glucose while boosting the metabolism. In Dr. Oz’s study of viewer volunteers, the group that took green coffee bean extract lost nearly twice as much weight as the placebo group.

Summer Supplement #6: Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a wonderful moisturizer, bug bite treatment, chapped lip remedy, and sunburn soother. It may even help you avoid burning. Coconut oil has an SPF around 8, so while it won’t do much to prevent sunburns during long days at the beach, it might be a good alternative to sunscreen for brief, indirect sun exposure. Some people have even found consuming coconut oil regularly leaves them less likely to burn in the first place. Another great use for coconut oil is for smoothing and moisturizing hair that becomes frizzy in the summer or damaged from pool chemicals; just rub a bit onto your strands in the morning. You can spread coconut oil on your armpits as a natural deodorant, and also use it as a shaving lotion to get your legs ready for shorts and swimsuits. This is truly a multipurpose summer supplement — it’s even great for grilling! Try Blue Breeze Coconut Oil or Perfect Coconut Oil.

Astaxanthin: The Little Known Supplement with Huge Benefits

By Ali Wetherbee

Astaxanthin: Great for Summer & Year Round Active Lifestyles!

Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean we are safe from the sun. Maybe you live somewhere where it’s sunny year round, in which case sun protection is always at the forefront of your mind. But even those of us who are out enjoying cooler weather at the apple orchard or the local pumpkin patch need to take sun precautions. No matter the temperature outside, the sun’s rays can be just as strong and damaging as in the height of summer, putting you at risk of UV and free-radical damage. Fortunately, there is an all natural supplement that can counteract this damage.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid produced by algae in response to stress. This carotenoid, called the “king of carotenoids,” is red in color and is responsible for the pink or reddish hue of sea creatures such as salmon, lobster, and shrimp. Astaxanthin is thought to reverse cellular damage and reduce free radicals in the body. Wild Atlantic sockeye salmon is the best food source of astaxanthin, but you’d need to eat 6 ounces every day to get a therapeutic dose.

Benefits

Astaxanthin is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants. It can cross the blood-brain barrier to protect the brain nervous system, cross the blood-retinal barrier to protect the eyes, enter every part of a cell, and combat multiple types of free radicals at the same time. It can aid in the prevention of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other disorders.

Astaxanthin may:

Lower your risk of heart disease

A report in Future Cardiology stated that astaxanthin may help fight oxidative stress and inflammation, two key risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Astaxanthin also normalizes blood pressure.

Support the immune system

A Nutrition & Metabolism study found that those taking astaxanthin had better immune responses, lower levels of  C-reactive protein, and fewer signs of DNA damage.

Protect against sun damage

Astaxanthin has been called “Nature’s Sunscreen” because it protects against damage from ultraviolet rays, and many people report being able to stay out in the sun longer without burning. It can also reverse signs of damage such as sun spots, freckles, and wrinkles.

Reduce joint pain

Astaxanthin can ease the pain of tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and post-exertional joint pain. According to a survey by Nutrex-Hawaii, astaxanthin improved back pain or arthritis pain in more than 80% of those taking it.

Improve stamina and endurance

Astaxanthin supports the body at the mitochondrial level and counteracts the free radicals generated during exercise. This gives you more energy, greater endurance, and a quicker recovery. It can also reduce lactic acid build up, decreasing post-workout muscle and joint soreness.

Protect vision

This supplement has a protective effect against macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

Reduce signs of aging

Astaxanthin reduces wrinkles and age spots and leaves skin more moist, elastic, smooth, and supple.

Combat cognitive decline and memory issues

A recent study found that middle-aged and elderly people who took 12mg of astaxanthin a day improved scores related to memory, cognition, and learning.

Correct low testosterone and low sperm count in men

A study by Angwafor and Anderson showed that astaxanthin raised low testosterone levels and improved related symptoms such as a decline in sex drive, depression, weakness, and poor energy. Research by Adams found that astaxanthin significantly improved sperm motility, count, and quality, for better fertility.

Mercola Astaxanthin

Mercola Astaxanthin is made from all-natural marine microalgae grown in Hawaii and is manufactured without chemical solvents or preservatives. It contains ALA and omega-3 to optimize absorption, since astaxanthin is fat-soluble and thus more bioavailable when combined with high-quality oils.

Adults and children with skin problems praise the oil for its ability to clear up previously untreatable rashes, eczema, and psoriasis. Doctors who have prescribed it to their patients have found remarkable results in improvement of a variety of inflammatory conditions. Here is an excerpt from an email written by one of many happy emu oil users:

I really want to thank you for marketing Walkabout Australian Emu Oil, it has really helped me.

I have had two major surgeries (back for ruptured and bulging discs and knee for a badly torn meniscus) over the last eight years and had lived with constant pain. I refused to take prescription pain pills and survived by taking daily doses of Back and Body aspirin just to get through the day (other over the counter pain killers did nothing for me). I tried physical therapy but the pain was too much.

A dear friend of mine sent me a bottle of your product and told me to just try it for a couple of weeks. Always the sceptic but willing to try anything I took the pills. As I told him, I didn’t know if it was coincidence or if they really worked but within ten days I could walk virtually pain free. Within a few more weeks my chronic back pain went away. I was astounded! I got several more bottles and took them religiously with no more pain.

One month ago, I ran out of my Emu oil right before a long trip with lots of walking and carrying heavy loads. I thought that I would be OK but one week in my knee started to give me some trouble. By the time I got home there was the old pain back and I had to revert to heavy doses of aspirin again. I am so glad to have the Emu Oil again and look forward to being as active as possible again.

Thank you for providing an outlet for this wonderful product. I am a firm believer in its claims.

Sincerely
Neal

Emu Oil Research

Studies on rodents have shown emu oil to be effective in reducing the inflammation associated with arthritis, ear infections, burns and wounds, and chemotherapy-induced mucositis (an inflammation of the digestive tract). In vitro analyses comparing emu oil to other avian oils have found emu oil to be strong in antioxidant properties and protect against oxidative damage. Although there isn’t yet much human research on emu oil, results of recent studies suggest that it may be beneficial for healing injuries, inflammation, and infections and treating digestive tract disorders, and may be a safer alternative than NSAID medications.

Walkabout Emu Oil

Walkabout Emu Oil is a rich source of…

  • Omega 3
  • Omega 6
  • Omega 9
  • Vitamin K2 (especially the isoform K2 MK-4, menatetrenone)
  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin E
  • CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)

Walkabout Emu Oil is derived from a species of emus especially high in vitamin K2, dubbed “Activator X” by Weston A. Price. Activator X works in synergy with vitamins A and D to support bone and tooth development and general health, and has been used to prevent and heal cavities. The healthiest, longest-living primitive peoples had diets rich in Activator X, as it helps the body absorb and utilize minerals. Walkabout Emu Oil is 100% natural, with nothing added or removed, and not pasteurized or chemically processed. Their emus are bred for the high vitamin K oil – not for meat or other purpose. This doesn’t mean it is wasted, but the Activator X rich oil is the main product, not a by-product like with other emu oils.  This supplement will benefit the whole family for general health, and can be consumed in higher doses to remedy various ailments. And Walkabout Emu Oil comes in three convenient forms, liquid and capsules for internal use or topical liquid for external use.
